The EU BIM Task Group Meeting Held in Prague

Daniel Novotný | 22.05.2026

On 28–29 April 2026, Prague hosted a workshop of the EU BIM Task Group, organized by the Czech Standardization Agency. Entitled “OpenBIM – from education and legislation to practice and data dictionaries based on technical standards,” the event brought together representatives of public clients and policymakers from EU Member States.

The workshop was designed for in-person participation and, with its limited capacity, enabled open and intensive discussions on key aspects of construction digitalization. The event was moderated by Eva Kaiserová from the Czech Standardization Agency.

The main objective of the meeting was to share experience with BIM implementation in practice and to exchange knowledge among experts from across Europe. Discussions focused in particular on:

  • current developments in BIM-related legislation,
  • the role of education and skills development,
  • data management and structuring in digital construction,
  • the use of technical standards and data dictionaries within the openBIM

The workshop combined short expert presentations, practical demonstrations, and moderated discussions, encouraging active participation from all attendees

One of the key themes was the role of technical standards as a foundation for effective collaboration in a BIM environment. It was highlighted that standards support common understanding, quality, compatibility, and long-term data sustainability.

The workshop also addressed the structure and importance of data dictionaries, which help unify terminology and enable information exchange across systems and stakeholders within the construction sector.

Part of the program focused on the development of the BIM strategy and legislation in the Czech Republic, including the new Act on Construction Information Management. The Act was published in 2025 and is expected to come into force in 2027.

The presentation also outlined the Czech Republic’s strategic goals aimed at advancing the digitalization of construction, improving data management for built assets, and strengthening the use of openBIM principles in practice.

The Prague workshop provided a valuable platform for connecting experts from different countries and laying the groundwork for further collaboration.
